Want to boost your results from your exercise routine? Check out kettlebells and the TRX for great results.
The current trends in fitness promote the "less is more" attitude. Such products as kettlebells and TRX's have taken the forefront in fitness by utilizing integrated movements to provide a more effective workout. Both systems use full body movements through multiple planes of motion to overload both the muscular and neurological systems. (By the way, this is what you are looking for from a great workout).
Kettlebell training originated in Russia during the 18 t...

Many exercisers forget that the heart is also a muscle that needs to be challenged to work at peak performance.
Each year, July blesses us with an athletic event that is unparalleled in modern sports. It is one of the most physically challenging events known to man yet usually flies under the radar in the United States. The Tour de France offers both team and individual bravado as cyclists sweep through the French countryside. I am often in awe of the riders who suffer in their saddles for hours on end only to conjure up an all out sprint at the end of the stage. For these athle...

See why YOU need to add resistance training to YOUR fitness routine.
Clients often wonder why resistance training should be incorporated into their workout routine. Many people approach their workouts in two phases: weight loss via cardiovascular workouts and "toning up" by doing resistance training. The thought being that once they reach goal weight, it is easier to "tone" the muscle.
First, let's get straight about one thing. There is no such thing as a "tone" muscle. Muscle fiber density is similar from person to person....

Tired of your old fitness and nutrition routine. Why not take advantage of the great weather and exercise outside?
Independence Day evokes many emotions for those who have served our country bravely. It is also a time to reflect on the struggles our young country has had for the quest for independence. The freedoms we take for granted are not often available to people in other nations. The ability to choose can be both a blessing and a curse. We have become a nation overwhelmed with consumer choices. Often, these choices leave us paralyzed to strive for a healthier lifestyle....

Are you intaking enough water to keep your body running at optimal performance?
With the heat of summer currently blasting us, it is important to talk about proper hydration. Since the human body is approximately 60% water, it is imperative that we imbibe fluids throughout the day. Many factors effect how quickly we lose water from our body. Breathing is a major source of water loss as we lose moisture during expiration. Sweat is another way that we end up losing body water. The higher the ambient air temperature, the more water gets lost du...

Spinning your wheels trying to lose weight? Here is an effective way to maximize your time when working out.
People often look at getting in shape as two different entities: weight loss and muscle toning. The initial thrust is often a commitment to cardio, spending countless hours trying to burn as many calories as possible. This direct form of calorie burning is often time consuming and frustrating as it takes long bouts of cardio to burn minimal calories. Try looking at how long it takes to burn off that morning mocha or a dessert cookie. It can make the task of weight loss...

Why does everyone believe the ads that claim incredible changes in your body in a short period of time?
We have become a society of convenience. The faster we can accomplish something, the better. This often is the same tactic we take in our aesthetic goals. We all would love to look great, but only a few hardcore, dedicated exercisers will ever achieve their goals. Now don't get upset that exercise is futile, (sometimes our aesthetic goals are WAY to lofty). Unfortunately, too many people get sucked into the nutrition ads that claim quick and easy results. C...

Everyone has at least one area on their body that they wish they could change.
Many of my clients come to me with specific areas on their bodies that they would like to see change. The thought process being that if they do specific exercises for the areas of concern, they will miraculously change said areas of concern. The classic example is abdominal crunches for men and inner and outer thigh for women. With abdominals being the trouble spot for men and thighs being a common trouble spot for women, many people focus just on these areas while neglectin...

Ever heard the myth about not eating after 8pm if you are trying to lose weight?
I often have clients tell me that they make sure they don't eat anything past 8pm. The fear is that any food consumed after the witching hour of 8pm, automatically get stored as subcutaneous body fat. They miss the overwhelming premise of nutrition that body composition is dependent upon the ratio of how many calories get consumed and how many calories get burned. At the end of the day, it is not so much about what TIME you eat as it is HOW MUCH you eat.
Eating the bu...

Ever wonder whether cardiovascular training or resistance training is more effective for weight loss?
Losing weight is probably the most common goal that I encounter with my personal training clients. One of the prevailing myths about weight loss is that the best way to achieve that “Greek physique” is to burn the fat away by cardiovascular training and then shape the body by utilizing resistance training techniques. Cardiovascular training is a great DIRECT way of burning calories. Repetitive movements that utilize large muscle groups create a large d...
